ALPHABET / বর্ণ

আমরা আমাদের মনের ভাব প্রকাশের জন্য বাক্য ও শব্দ ব্যবহার করে থাকি। এই শব্দ গুলি  আবার গঠিত হয়ে কত গুলি ধ্বনি দ্বারা। এবার, এই ধ্বনি গুলি লেখার জন্য আমরা কতগুলি  সাংকেতিক চিহ্ন ব্যবহার করে থাকি। সেই সাংকেতিক চিহ্ন গুলিকে বর্ণ বা অক্ষর বা LETTER বলে।

An alphabet is a writing system or  a list of symbols for writing. The basic symbols in an alphabet are called letters. In an alphabet, each letter is a symbol for a sound or related sounds.

The English alphabet consists of 26 letters. Each letter has an uppercase ("capital letter") and a lowercase ("small letter") form.

1.    Five of the letters in the English Alphabet are vowels: A, E, I, O, U.

ইংরেজি ২৬ টি বর্ণের মধ্যে ৫ টি হল vowels / বাংলায়ে স্বরবর্ণ : A, E, I, O, U.

2.There are two vowel-like sound they act  like a consonant, in that it serve the same function in a syllable carrying the same amount of prominence as a consonant relative to a true vowel, the nucleus of the syllable. They are called semi-vowels .Ex. W & Y

ইংরেজি বর্ণের দুটি বর্ণ W & Y  , vowel এর মত উচ্চারিত হলেও consonant এর নিয়ম মেনে শব্দে  ব্যবহার করা হয়। এদের  semi-vowel বলে।

3. The remaining 21 letters are consonants: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V,W, X, Y,Z.

বাকি ২১ টি বর্ণ হল consonant/বাংলা তে ব্যঞ্জন বর্ণ ঃ B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V,W, X, Y,Z.

4.The Old English alphabet letters were 29: A B C D E F G H I K L M N O P Q R S T V X Y Z & ⁊ Ƿ Þ Ð Æ

 প্রাচীন ইংরেজিতে ২৯ টি বর্ণ ছিল।

5. Two letters, “A” and “I” are used as words.

ইংরেজি বর্ণের দুটি বর্ণ “A” এবং “I” কেবল শব্দ হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

 

DIPTHONG

A diphthong is a word  formed from Greek, ‘ diphthongos’, literally "double sound" or "double tone"; it also known as a gliding vowel (the sound glides from one vowel sound to another ).It is a combination of two adjacent vowel sounds within the same syllable. Technically, a diphthong is a vowel with two different targets: that is, the tongue moves during the pronunciation of the vowel.

‘diphthong’  শব্দটি গ্রীক , ‘ diphthongos’ থেকে নেওয়া হয়েছে। এখানে একাধিক স্বরবর্ণের সম্মিলনে বিশেষ ধ্বনি বা যৌগিক স্বর এর সৃষ্টি হয়।

1.      ‘ai’– rail, rain, main, pain,……………………………..

2.      ‘oa’ – coat, throat, boat, road,……………………………..

3.      ‘ie’ – lie, die, kite, five, drive,……………………………….

4.      ‘oy’ – toy, boy, coy,………………………….,

5.      ‘ou’ – round, ground, found, pound, sound,………………….

6.      ‘ow’ – cow, how, now,………………………

 

There are few examples having no double sound.

এখানে একাধিক স্বরবর্ণের সম্মিলনে একটি স্বরের সৃষ্টি হয়।

     1. ‘ea’ – dream, cease, please, beat,……………………

     2. ‘ea’ – thread, dead, head, lead,…………………….

    3. ‘ee’ – seed, deed,  need, weed,…………………………

    4. ‘oo’ – wool, book, boon, nook, boon,………………………….
