SOME MODEL LETTERS WRITTEN BY EMINENT PERSONS

1. Macaulay’s letter to father:

                                                                                                                                                             Shelford,
                                                                                                                                                                                                     22nd February, 1813

My dear Papa,
As this is a whole holiday, I cannot find a better time for answering your letter. With respect to my health, I am very well and tolerably cheerful, as Blundell, the best and most clever of allthe scholars, is very kind to me, and talks to me, and takes mypart. He is quite a friend of Mr Preston.                                                                                              The other boys, especially Lyon, a Scotch boy, and Wilber-force, are very good-natured. In my learning I am classed withWilberforce whom all the boys allow to be very clever, very droll  and very impudent . We are exercised once a week in English Composition, and once in Latin Composition, and in letters to each other of persons renowned in hisory.                                                                                                                                                          The kindness which Mr. Preston shows me is very great. He always assists me in what I cannot do, and takes me to walk out with him now and then.                                                                                                                                                  My room is a delightful  snug , little chamber, which nobody can enter, as there is a trick about opening the door. I sit like a king with my writing-desk before me; for (would you believe it ?) there is a writing-desk in my chest of drawers; my books on one side, my box of papers on the other, with my arm-chair and my candle, for every boy has a candle-stick, snuffers  and extinguisher  of his own.
Being pressed for room, I will conclude what I have to say tomorrow, and ever remain,

Your affectionate son,

Thomas

Dear Mahatmaji,                                                                                                                                              At last Congress session some rude hands have deeply hurt Bengal with an ungracious persistence. Please apply eithout delay balm to the wound with your own hands and prevent it from fostering. With love,

3.A Letter from the man who made the wires talk, to Mr. Hubbard, his future father-in-law.

Boston (Mass.)

                                                                                                                                                          2nd June,1875

Dear Mr Hubberd,
I have accidentally made a discovery of the very great importance in regard to the Transmission Instruments. I have succeeded today in transmitting signals without any battery what-ever! The musical note produced at the Receiving End was sensibly equivalent of that at the Transmitting End in loudness asa well as in pitch.

I shall call upon you tomorrow evening as there area several matters I wish to talk over you.

                                                                                                                                                                In haste,

                                                                                                                                                             Yours respectfully,

                                                                                                                                                        A.Graham Bell

3. A Letter from Gandhiji to children.

                                                                                                                                                         March 21, 1932

Dear Children,
Do you remember my definition of God? Instead of saying that God is Truth, I say that Truth is God. This was not always clear to me. I realized it only four years ago, but my conduct has been unconsciously based on that realization. I have known God only as Truth. There was a time I have doubts about existence of God, but I never doubted the existence of Truth. Truth is nothing material, pure intelligence. It rules over the universe. Therfore it is Iswara, the Lord. Truth is to me is a matter of experience. I say ‘almost’ because I have not seen Truth face to face. I had only glimpses of it. But  my faith is indomitable.

                                                                                                                                                                          Yours

                                                                                                                                     Bapu

4. Charles Lamb's letter to Coleridge on a domestic tragedy.

My dearest Friend,
Some of my friends, or the public papers, by this time may have informed you of the terrible calamities that have fallen on our family. I will only give you the outlines. My poor dear sister, in a fit of insanity, has been the death of her own mother. I was at hand only time enough to snatch the knife out of her grasp. She is at present in a mad house, from whence I fear she must be removed to a hospital. God has preserved to me my senses.I eat and drink and sleep and have my judgement, I believe, very sound. My poor father was slightly wounded, and I am left to the care of him and my aunt. Mr Norris of the Bluecoat School has been very kind to us, and we have no other friend, but thank God I am very calm and composed, and able to do the best that remains to do. Write as religious a letter as possible, but no mention of what is gone and done with me the former things are passed away, and I have something more to do than to feel.

God Almighty have us in His keeping. Mention nothing of poetry. I have destroyed every vestige  of past vanities of that kind. Do as you please, but if you publish, publish mine without name or initial, and never send me a book, I charge you.

                                                                                                                                                                          C. L.
