ACTIVE VOICE,PASSIVE VOICE & QUASI PASSIVE VOICE

A voice is a grammatical category which makes it possible to view the action of a sentence in three ways, without changing the tense and meaning.

THERE ARE THREE KIND OF VOICES:

ACTIVE VOICE   :  PASSIVE VOICE  :   QUASI -  PASSIVE VOICE

1. Every sentence has a subject and an action. The subject is the person or thing the sentence is about, and the action is what the subject is doing. When a sentence is in active voice, the subject is performing the action and the subject comes before the action in the sentence.

Here the subject of the verb is the doer of the action of the verb or the action.

For example:   The old man caught the thief.                                                                                                  In the above sentence ‘The old man’ does the action of the verb ‘caught’ i.e. the subject is the doer of the action of the verb. In this sentence the verb ‘caught ‘is in the Active Voice.

2.WHEN THE SUBJECT OF A SENTENCE  IS ACTED UPON, THE VERB IS IN PASSIVE VOICE.

For example: The thief was caught by the old man.

Here, ‘the thief’ is the subject of the verb ‘was caught’.

But the subject ‘the thief’ does not do the action of the verb.

On the other hand, the action of the verb happens to, and affects, the subject . ‘the thief’.

So, in this sentence the verb ‘was caught ‘ is in the Passive Voice.

[PASSIVE VOICE is generally used for describing process, narrating incidents, defining, impersonal scientific writing, writing notice, making announcement, classifying, making request and invitation, describing social and historical incidents and giving warning, advice, suggestion etc.]

In order to change the sentence from Active voice to Passive voice we have to follow the rules given below.

1.   The Subject of the verb in the Active voice becomes the Object in the Passive Voice and it often follows a preposition ‘by’.

2.   The Object of the verb in the Active voice becomes the Subject of the Verb in the Passive Voice.

3.   The Principal Verb of the Active Voice is always changed into Past Participle form and it sits next to the correct form of the verb ‘be’ in the Passive Voice.

4.   Sometimes verbs in Active Voice have two Objects.                                                          Then change only any one of the Object into Subject in Passive Voice.             The second Object will remain as an Object again in the Passive voice.            This Object is called Retained Object.

5.   When a Complex Sentence is changed from Active Voice to Passive Voice, the Voice of the both Principal Clause and Subordinate Clause should be changed.

6.   Generally Double Passive in Simple Sentence or Single Clause  gives wrong meaning, so it should be avoided.

Ex. We proposed to hold the final match. (Active Voice)                                                         The final match was proposed to be held by us. (Incorrect)                                                   It was proposed by them to hold the final match.(Passive Voice, correct)

In order to change the sentence from passive to active you need to recognize what the subject of the sentence is and then rewrite the sentence so the subject is performing the action.

The thief was caught by the old man.

Step One: Identify the subject of the sentence - who is doing an action?

‘The thief’  is not doing an action, so it can't be the subject.

The only person  doing an action here is ‘the old man’.

‘The old man’ caught the thief. So, ‘the old man’ is the subject of the sentence.

Step Two: Rewrite the sentence so the subject is performing the action.
